The Big O: a lake with a big personality
Known affectionately as the Big O, Lake Okeechobee is a defining feature of inland South Florida. Wide horizons, freshwater marshes and a celebrated fishing tradition give the area a character quite different from the beaches and theme parks that many visitors associate with the state.
Fishing is the headline attraction for many guests, especially largemouth bass. Local guides can introduce visitors to the lake, while public shoreline areas offer quieter ways to enjoy the view. Always check conditions and local rules before setting out.

STORY 02 / 08
Kissimmee Prairie: Florida under a bigger sky
Beyond the waterfront, Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park protects an extraordinary expanse of dry prairie at the headwaters of the Everglades. Here, tall skies and open landscapes replace the familiar palm-lined postcard scene.
It is a rewarding destination for nature photography, birdwatching and looking for species such as crested caracaras and burrowing owls. The park is also known for stargazing opportunities. Check official park information before visiting.

STORY 03 / 08
Birds, wetlands and tropical wildlife
Okeechobee rewards travelers who slow down and look around. Wetlands and open grasslands attract birds; quiet trails invite you to observe the region's changing light, vegetation and wildlife.
Taylor Creek Storm Water Treatment Area and the surrounding region are highlighted for birding. Wildlife is wild, of course: sightings vary, and visitors should give animals plenty of space.

STORY 04 / 08
A day outdoors: walk, pedal, explore
The Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail follows the great lake's shoreline atop portions of the Herbert Hoover Dike. It offers a different perspective on the water, with expansive views and opportunities to walk or ride a bicycle.
Surfaces and access may vary by section or maintenance closures. Other local options include nature walks and trails in the surrounding prairie country.

STORY 05 / 08
Rodeo, music and local Florida traditions
Okeechobee has a strong ranching and agricultural identity. Local rodeos offer a glimpse into that heritage, while seasonal festivals, concerts and community events add a social side to a trip.
The Okeechobee County Agri-Civic Center is associated with rodeo events. Always consult organizers' current schedules; a promotional picture here does not mean a particular event is scheduled.

Airboats, waterways and fresh perspectives
For a more adventurous day, visitors can look into independently operated airboat excursions and other guided outdoor experiences in the region. The wetlands are an important part of South Florida's landscape, and a guided outing can reveal a new side of the ecosystem.
Tours depend on operator availability, weather and conditions. HOMSTEL is not representing these activities as included with a stay.

Your own private dock. A world of water beyond.
Imagine stepping into the Florida sunshine, boarding your boat at your own private dock, and gliding out toward the broad waters of Lake Okeechobee. Or imagine arriving by water, tying up beside your retreat, and ending the day with sunset reflections dancing across the canal.
This is one of the most exciting parts of the property’s story: the wider Okeechobee Waterway connects Florida’s Atlantic and Gulf sides through the lake, rivers and canals. It gives this address a rare sense of freedom — a place where boating is not just an activity, but part of the whole experience.
Private dock and canal access are described by the owner. The images are illustrative and celebrate the boating lifestyle connected with the location.

STORY 08 / 08 · MUSIC & MAGIC
Okeechobee Music & Arts Festival — where Florida comes alive
For a few unforgettable days, Okeechobee transforms into a spectacular world of music, art, lights and open-air celebration. The Okeechobee Music & Arts Festival brings major performers and music lovers together at Sunshine Grove, where the energy of live performances meets the beauty of Florida's natural landscape.
Set among trees, meadows and warm evening skies, the festival is one of Florida's standout music-and-arts experiences. Its 2026 return celebrated ten years since the festival began, featuring The Lumineers, FISHER, GRiZ and T-Pain, among many other artists. Imagine the music carrying through the night, glowing stages, immersive art and a crowd sharing a moment they'll remember long after the last song.
It is part of what makes this region far more surprising than most visitors expect.
